Mission Statement
The Oliver Ellsworth Homestead, including Matthies Hall and twelve
surrounding acres in Windsor, Connecticut, serves as a museum and educational platform where
historic preservation, artifact conservation and archival materials can
be studied and interpreted. The Homestead is owned by the Connecticut
Daughters of the American Revolution, Inc. and managed by the Ellsworth
Memorial Association, Inc. Board of Directors (EMA). EMA is committed to
offering educational and cultural programming to the local community and
to diverse and multigenerational audiences. Through its museum offerings
and special tours and events, the EMA seeks to educate the public of
the historic importance of the Ellsworth family in the founding and
early years of our nation, and to interpret social and everyday life in
Connecticut during that time. Oliver Ellsworth was the Third Chief
Justice of the US Supreme Court, a framer of the Constitution,
Connecticut’s first senator and the author of the Judiciary Act, which
forms the basis of our present day federal judicial system. (Rev.
January 2006)
