Ruth Belden, widow of Captain John Stoughton, married her cousin,
Samuel Wyllys, a colonel in the Continental Army, in 1777.
In 1780 she shared the hardships of a soldier's life with her husband
when he was quartered with General Washington's army along the Hudson River.
When General Wyllys retired in 1781, they settled in Hartford, where she died in 1807.
